Self-Awareness is having a clear understanding of the personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivations, and emotions. Self-Awareness is important because it allows to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. In order the encourage awareness within a group it’s important to start with being aware of yourself. First half (15')

Personal strengths and weaknesses

Divide the group into teams
Hand out the flipchart paper and pens

• ASK players to draw an outline of a person (on flipchart paper) and WRITE their ideas (outside of the body) on what they think self-awareness is and why it is important.
• REVIEW their feedback.
• Players then write their own definition of self-awareness and three reasons why it is important in their booklets.
• SHOW the first 3 minutes of the Gareth Bale video and ASK players to think of his strengths and weaknesses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykg-G4zZzu4
• ASK the group to work in teams to identify examples of strengths and weaknesses and describe what impact this can have in a team environment.  Players need to write their ideas on the inside of the body that they have drawn on flipchart paper. PROVIDE a personal example. Strength - I enjoy learning new things and the impact this can have in a team environment is it encourages positive role model behavior. Weaknesses – I can be impatient when under pressure and the impact this can have in a team environment is it could make others feel uncomfortable and stressed.
• FEEDBACK as a whole group by asking each team to share one strength and its impact and one weakness and its impact.
• ASK players to write in their booklets three strengths and three ways this can impact on others and three weaknesses and three ways this can impact on others.

Animal Football Teams

• ASK the group to stay in the same team and present the following information (at this point they shouldn’t know that the players are animals);

You are a Manager preparing for a World Cup. It is your task to choose your perfect team for the competition from the selection of players in this envelope. You must choose 11 players, including a captain, in positions for a 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 3-5-2, 5-3-1 or 5-4-1 formation. Discuss and decide which players you would select whilst always being aware of the following;

The player’s main strength
The player’s main weakness

You can only confirm a player in a position once you have identified one strength and one weakness. Please write this down on the information sheet provided
